Grocery Cart Confessionals: Getting Back to the Natural Me

I used to be a avid runner.

In my early 20s, I would run between 15 and 25 miles per week. My pace was between an eight-and-a-half and nine minute mile. And I never got sore or had an injury. I loved running outside and found there was no great joy than my tennis shoes, my headphones, a beautiful morning, and a wide open trail.

But somewhere in my late 20s, while I was training for a half-marathon, I injured my knee. Running was no longer an option, so I transitioned to the indoor safety of an elliptical machine and a weight bench for my workouts.

But I missed running.

I missed the outdoors. I missed early mornings on a trail with the sun rising. Sure, I still got a good workout, but it didn’t give me the same natural high as completing a six mile run in the fresh air. But I didn’t run again, because I was scared I would injure myself and it would be worse than before.

Now, fast forward to my late 30s.

And middle-age is staring me head-on in the face.

There are many components of middle age I despise (like things that sag regardless of what you do).

But there is a wisdom that occurs too. I realized I only get this life, with this body, here on this earth, so I better make it count.

I needed to quit being scared of what could happen and start embracing what makes me happy. I realized I needed to keep and nurture my natural essence because it’s what makes me different from anybody else.

So I’ve been getting back to the natural me.

And I’ve been running outside again.

I run slower. I run less miles. I run with better form. I buy better shoes. (Because age has taught me a thing or two.)

And I’m happy. I appreciate the beauty around me and the beauty inside me. And I’m thankful I have the wisdom that comes with age to accept the natural me.

  2. I’m with you — I love being outside in the fresh air… I just love being outside on my deck or in my garden…

    Another thing I absolutely love, though, which I, too have been missing is water. I used to love deep water aerobics and used to go canoeing with my parents and family from time to time (we are part of a canoe club focused on safety and protecting the rivers…). And I haven’t done either for several years. I work most weekends and cannot get away for a trip right now, but perhaps I can talk my stepdad into taking the canoe out on a area lake… or I need to look into special income pricing for water aerobics again… maybe that membership is more affordable now…

    But, in the meantime, I still can be out in the garden and enjoy nightly walks with my husband and 6 month old puppy…..

    I believe there are certain years in our life that are life changing. And this has been one of those years.

  5. Kelly – love this post. I used to run in college. Lately I’ve been trying to make myself get out there and do it again (MANY years later). I agree, we gotta go for what we want and I want to be healthier and make time for me.
