It’s a gazillion-eyed, several-horned, flying purple people eater. Sure looks strange to me….
It’s getting close to Halloween and that means it is time to showcase Team Kansas City’s Rice Krispies® Treats Making Memory Challenge. This time we were challenged to come up with an original recipe and a craft.
And for those that follow Kansas City Mamas – you know that I don’t do crafts. Ever. At All. Nada.
Which is fine if you have other members on your team that are crafty.
Um, we don’t. We like to think crafty. We just don’t do crafty. (Proof being the blister on my finger from the the hot glue gun.)
But never fear, we put on our thinking caps. Rolled up our sleeves. Had a class of wine and created a fun and VERY easy craft that would be great a kid’s Halloween party favor or as a decoration at your next home football party.
Here is our soon-to-be famous Cinnamonster Rice Krispies® Treat Snack Mix that will tempt every salty sweet lover who walks past.
Cinnamonster Rice Krispies® Treat Snack Mix
- 3 Tbsp. Unsalted Butter
- 4oz. cinnamon flavored marshmallows (1/2 bag)
- 2 1/2c. Traditional Rice Krispies®
- Cinnamon Sugar (Mix to your personal cinnamon/sugar preference)
Melt 3Tbsp. Butter in a heavy saucepan over med-high heat.
Add marshmallows, stirring constantly until melted and mixture is smooth.
Add RiceKrispies® to hot mixture in saucepan (this keeps them warm, and thus easier to manipulate, longer)
Mix thoroughly.
Spray cooking spray on a cookie sheet and pull out small chunks of RiceKrispies mixture one at a time to work with. Pull apart enough to make small balls of krispies treats, slightly smaller than “bite sized”.
You will need to work quickly. The cooler the mixture gets, the more difficult it is to shape.
Roll each ball in the cinnamon and sugar mixture to coat. Set aside on waxed paper.
If not using immediately, cover tightly to store.
Tip **If you want a more crunchy texture to your cinnamon balls, set your marshmallows out the night before so that they dry out. They will melt as normal but when the final mixture cools it will be more crunchy and less chewy.**
Mix Cinnamon balls with 1 1/2c. popped popcorn, 1/2c. salted cashews and 1/2c. chocolate candy pieces.
Just in case cinnamon isn’t your thing (or because we couldn’t stop ourselves) here is a chocolate variation: Swap out cinnamon marshmallows for chocolate ones and Cocoa Krispies® for the traditional ones. In the mix, use candy corn in place of chocolate candy pieces.
And now the craft….After seeing these serving dish monsters in a magazine we just knew they were right for our project. Easy. Reuseable. Cute.
Felt Monster Containers
Wrap a piece of felt around a used container and secure with hot glue. Your felt should be 2-3 inches taller than the container while leaving roughly 1 inch of felt hanging over the bottom.
Fold the ends of the felt under the bottom of the canister and glue them down for a smooth finish to the bottom edge of the container.
Cut flaps, wedges or spikes into the felt that rises above the container. This will be the monster hair.
Glue felt shapes and stripes on your container to satisfy your inner monster designer. Use “Googly Eyes” and “Pom Poms” for random effects.
The best part of the craft – there is no “right” or “wrong” way to make it. Which is perfect for those of us who are less than crafty or have kiddos that are less than crafty. Our kiddos were great helpers during the challenge.
The loved rolling the cinnamon balls in sugar and helping to glue the accouterments onto the monsters (they got carried away with the “Googly Eyes”). This is a fun afternoon project for your family and then you have snacks for the game too.

Instead of making popcorn balls, I make rice krispy balls for my neighborhood children. That way even the little one can eat them too. and to make them for Halloween just add candy corn, or even gummy worms.to them.
recipe
a bag of marshmallows, 1/4 cup margarine, 6 cups rice krispies, and a bag of candy corn or gummy worms
melt margarine and rice krispies in microwave. add cereal and candy corn mix well and shape into balls wrap in cellophane wrap and you have an inexpience halloween treat to give out for the kids
