My FREE item list isn’t extra long, but I was able to get SO many items for under $.50 each that I stocked up. I was especially excited to get the Libby’s Veggies and Fruit, Chunky Soup, and Spaghetti Os for so cheap because they will be donated to my local food pantry.
On a side note – I broke the register at Hen House again. Luckily, Jennifer, the supervisor, was working my checkout lane. She was able to fix the problem and took my coupons (all 37 of them). They all know me as “the coupon lady” and are nice as can be. I love my College & Quivera Hen House!
Price Chopper
I went the Ball’s Price Chopper at I-35 & Roe to pick up some MORE Hatch Chilies. And I have to tell you that I was in HOG heaven in their Hispanic food aisle.
They had all sorts of weird ethnic foods of varying shapes, sizes, and brands. I can see a future trip there when I have a little discretionary money. Oh, my.
Pictured: (2) 8-count flour tortillas, (2) Breyer’s Ice Cream, 3.44 lbs white onions, (9) limes, and 10.31 lbs of Hatch Chili Peppers.
Total: $20.53
The white onions were DIRT cheap at $.50/lb and the limes were a screaming deal at .12 each. (Can you say Gin & Tonics this weekend?) I’ll be drinking those as I’m roasting the 10 lbs of Hatch Chili Peppers on my grill.
So, it was an EXPENSIVE week for me.
When you add in the retail value of my CSA plus everything in the picture, I’ve spent $115.60.
But the majority of these purchases were for my stockpile. And when prices are this low – you need to take advantage of them.
Will I need to watch my spending the rest of the month? Absolutely.
But, will I enjoy all those peppers, canned fruit, and microwave popcorn in January. Absolutely.

I had a stock up trip to HyVee yesterday too. I only had time for one store, so all my money went to Hy-Vee this week.
I used 23 coupons. Two of them were for free items. And total, I saved about $28!!!
I should be stocked on after school snacks for a while. Now, I need to find a good hiding place for these snacks.
i am getting ready to do a stock up trip tomorrow, so i was checking out what you got and where. i did have one really great discovery this last week–what to do with those $5 similac formula checks i have gotten in the mail. we are at the tail end of our formula days with my daugther, and we’ve been using the walmart brand because it is sooo much cheaper. this last week though, i realized i could use those $5 checks on the ready to serve bottles which cost 5.50. at 91% off, i used all 6 checks i had received and we are good to go for a while with 6 bottles that cost all of $3!
Yeah, Molly. That is awesome. That’s like getting formula for FREE – and getting it for FREE is like getting a raise. Hope you have a great trip to Hen House.
I had a great trip to Hen House today. Spent $17 and change, saved $32. I love those days! Do you know about those fundraising coupon books? I bought three from my synagogue and love them. I got 10 lbs of apples for Rosh Hashana at $.75/lb with the coupon! I will head to HyVee early next week to use up my catalina from last week’s cereal deal. I’ve got 18 boxes of GM cereal for ~ $2.50 TOTAL. Crazy!
Mara – I’m aware of the coupon books, but unfortunately no one in my area sells them. *ahem* We seem to be a Hy-Vee only area. And while the Hy-Vee coupon books are great, I’d love to get my hands on a Hen House one too.
